About Dr Pranaw Kumar
Explore my journey from medical education to becoming a leading spine surgeon, dedicated to innovative treatments and compassionate care for patients with spinal disorders.
There are two professional bodies which are authorised to certify competence to work as a surgeon in India. An M.S. (ortho) degree is certified by the Medical Council of India (now NMC). Diplomate of National Board (DNB) is a medical qualification awarded by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). The DNB course is approved by the Government of India and is considered equivalent to the postgraduate and post-doctoral programmes offered by the medical colleges in India. Doctor Kumar has been deemed fit by both the professional bodies to practice in India.
In the UK Overseas-trained surgeons before working as a surgeon, must register with the General Medical Council and satisfy the UK authorities that their qualifications and experience are appropriate for the work they intend to undertake. The letters FRCS (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons), after a surgeon’s name mean that the surgeon has education and training, professional qualifications, and surgical competence, has passed a rigorous evaluation, and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College, of which the surgeon is a current Fellow.
To further his knowledge and competence in spine surgery, he has done MCh in Spine surgery from England. Unlike most Spine surgeons in in India, who have been trained mostly in uncertified short-term courses, he has done his fellowships under the strict guidance of surgeons in England. He has done his orthopaedic spine surgery and Neurosurgical spine surgical skill training at board certified centres in England. Dr. Kumar exemplifies the Wilson’s law being true.
